Twitter Is Having Trouble Adding Users, but Learning to Make Money From Them

Expectations are everything, and Twitter (TWTR) has the rotten luck of having its expectations set by Facebook (FB), its much-larger cousin atop the social media world. Twitter reported its first-ever quarterly earnings as a company on Wednesday, and by some measures they were quite good. The company brought in $243 million in revenue in the fourth quarter of last year, up 116 percent from the same period a year earlier, beating analyst expectations. If you omit a one-time payment of stock to its employees, the company reported income of $9.7 million. Still, its shares fell precipitously in after-hours trading, and were down more than 11 percent within an hour of the report.

The major reason seems to be concern about the rate at which Twitter is adding users—more slowly than investors would like. The company reported that it had 241 million monthly average users at yearend, coming in below what many analysts had expected. This was the fourth consecutive quarter the company’s user base grew more slowly than it had the quarter before. Also troubling is that the number of timeline views, a measure of how engaged people are with the service, declined this quarter, in the U.S. and abroad. Twitter said the drop was a result of changes in its product, and that timeline views were only one measure of engagement.

In a conference call, investors expressed concerns about these trends repeatedly. The company acknowledged the obvious: that it hasn’t been as easy to attract users as it had been in the past. “Up until last year, our growth was viral and organic,” Dick Costolo, the company’s chief executive, told investors. “Growth was something that happened to us.” Now the company has to work for users, but Costolo insists it’s going to figure things out.

STORY: What Does Twitter’s Sizzling Stock Run Tell Us? Absolutely Nothing
To draw an ambiguously useful but completely unavoidable comparison, Facebook added 170 million users in 2013; Twitter added 56 million. It’s not completely clear why we evaluate Twitter’s performance based on Facebook’s recent success, but apparently we must. Fair or not, “Facebook seemed to have set some kind of gold standard,” says Brian Blau, an analyst at Gartner.

What Twitter did improve on was making money from people using its site. The company’s ad revenue per timeline view, a way to measure how effectively it makes money from engagement, was up 76 percent from a year earlier. Twitter had a “modest increase” in the number of ads its users actually saw in the fourth quarter.

So if Twitter is having trouble adding new users, but is getting better at making money off those it does attract, is that a good or bad thing on balance? Either way, it doesn’t seem that buying Twitter stock has been an exercise in rational thinking. When the market closed Wednesday, its share price was about 2.5 times what it was when the company began trading in November, when many said idle excitement was the main force driving up the price.

STORY: For Brands, Being on Twitter Means Always Having to Say You’re Sorry
Investors have been looking for a reason to dump on Twitter. Of 32 analysts polled by Bloomberg before Wednesday’s earnings report, 12 had a sell rating on the stock, while only 7 said it was a good buy. (The remaining 13 said they’d hold on to it.)

This can all seem very dramatic, but the blips and bumps in the stock price are likely to be forgotten in the near future. As my colleague Eric Chemi pointed out this morning, the performance of a stock in its first several months is useless in predicting how it will do beyond that.

BlackBerry Met With Facebook Last Week on Potential Bid

BlackBerry Ltd. (BBRY) executives flew to California to meet with Facebook Inc. (FB) last week to gauge its interest in a potential bid for the struggling smartphone-maker, according to people familiar with the matter.

It remains unclear whether Facebook is interested in placing a bid. Spokesmen for both companies declined to comment.

The meeting could reignite speculation that Facebook is building its own smartphone. As the social network has increasingly catered to mobile users in recent years, with nearly half of its sales generated from ads shown on wireless devices, it has also grown dependent on hardware makers such as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. to distribute its software and collect user data.

Buying BlackBerry would let Facebook cut out these partners and sell a line of its own phones directly to its most rabid users. Still, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has publicly denied wanting to build his own phone, calling this the “wrong strategy.” As an alternative, the company has pursued deeper partnerships with manufacturers on mobile software called Facebook Home.

20131030-051040.jpg
Any potential BlackBerry bidder would have a number of assets to look over, though the value of each asset is up for debate.

BlackBerry is sitting on about $2.6 billion in cash and has no debt, though that cash pile is starting to erode as the company deals with weak phone sales, inventory pile up and layoffs.

The most attractive piece for a company like Facebook will most likely be BlackBerry’s patents, which consist of security network technology and smartphone component patents, among others, and which analysts estimate to be worth between $1 and $3 billion.

And for a company looking to get a jump-start in the smartphone game, BlackBerry still has around 70 million subscribers around the world (though BlackBerry no longer reports that figure, which is likely smaller now).

And BlackBerry is seeing renewed interest in its BlackBerry Messenger tool, which might interest a potential buyer. The company announced Tuesday that there are now 20 million iPhone and Android users using BBM, and more than 80 million total monthly active users.

Last month BlackBerry struck a preliminary deal to go private with Canadian insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. for $4.7 billion, or $9 a share. The due diligence period for that deal ends next week, but BlackBerry and its advisers remain open to interest from other potential bidders. The deadline for other bids is Monday.

BlackBerry’s stock is currently trading under $9. On Tuesday the shares rose about 1.3% to $8.31. Facebook’s stock was down 1.6% to $49.41.

BlackBerry does have other players circling. Earlier this month The Wall Street Journal reported that Chinese computer giant Lenovo Group Ltd. was interested in a possible bid. And BlackBerry has signed a nondisclosure agreement with distressed asset specialists Cerberus Captial Management LP, people familiar with the matter have said.

BlackBerry’s co-founders, Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin are also weighing a bid, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing earlier this month.

After years of seeing its share of the smartphone market erode, BlackBerry in August announced a wide-ranging strategic review that essentially put the company up for sale. The company wrote down nearly $1 billion in unsold smartphone inventory, and is in the process of cutting 40% of its staff.

特別損失はARM(ARM.L: 株価, 企業情報, レポート)の半導体を搭載したサーフェスRTに関連したもの。

Seattle Times

1. I like it.
2. Success will depend on execution
3. Rearranging the chair on the Titanic

Microsoft announces sweeping reorganization

In a sweeping reorganization designed to further Microsoft’s transformation into a devices-and-services company, CEO Steve Ballmer today realigned the company according to function, cutting in half the number of product divisions and centralizing other services such as marketing, finance and business development.

The company will now be organized around the functions of: engineering (including supply chain and datacenters), marketing, business development and evangelism, advanced strategy and research, finance, human resources, legal, and COO areas (including field, support, commercial operations and IT).

Within engineering, the four groups are: Operating Systems, Applications and Services, Cloud and Enterprise, Devices and Studios.

Missing from the list of senior leaders in the new world order is Office President Kurt DelBene, who will be retiring, Ballmer said in an email he sent to employees this morning.

A notable addition to the team is Mark Penn, former Clinton advisor who joined Microsoft in 2012 to work on strategic and special projects (such as “Scroogled” ad campaign against Google).

Ballmer said the reorganization will help the company “innovate with greater speed, efficiency and capability” and “will enable us to execute even better on our strategy to deliver a family of devices and services that best empower people for the activities they value most and the enterprise extensions and services that are most valuable to business.”

The changes, which take effect immediately, are also designed to foster more collaboration — something Ballmer emphasized with the subject of his email: “One Microsoft.”

Here’s who’s going to be doing what. (The title of “president” will no longer be used for division heads. Instead, nearly all of the senior leadership team will hold the title of “executive vice president.”)

In the engineering groups:

Julie Larson-Green, formerly corporate vice president of Windows engineering, is now executive vice president of Devices and Studios. This group will handle all of Microsoft’s hardware development and supply chain, from Xbox to Surface to keyboards and mice. Larson-Green will also be charge of all the studio experiences including games, music, video and other entertainment.
Qi Lu, formerly president of Online Services division, is now executive vice president of Applications and Services. This group will handle Office, Lync, SharePoint, Skype, Yammer, Bing and MSN. It is charged with providing apps and services in core technologies in productivity, communication and search.
Terry Myerson, formerly corporate vice president of Windows Phone division, is now executive vice president of Operating Systems. That includes all the operating systems for consoles, mobile devices, PCs and back-end systems including Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox. It also includes the core cloud services for the operating systems.
Satya Nadella, formerly president of Server & Tools business, is now executive vice president of Cloud and Enterprise. This group will lead development of back-end and enterprise IT technologies such as SQL Server, Windows Azure and System Center. It will also lead datacenter development, construction and operation.
In the other groups (what Ballmer refers to as “disciplines”):

Tony Bates, formerly president of Skype, is now executive vice president of business development and evangelism. He will focus on corporate strategy, Microsoft’s key partnerships (including those with Nokia, Yahoo and PC and device manufacturers), and reaching out to developers. His group will also work on business development efforts that were previously the work of the product divisions.
Lisa Brummel, executive vice president, continues to lead human resources.
Amy Hood, executive vice president, continues to be chief financial officer. She will also centralize all product group finance organizations.
Mark Penn, formerly corporate vice president in charge of strategic and special projects, is now executive vice president of advertising and strategy. He will “take a broad view of marketing strategy,” Ballmer said in his email, and, along with Tami Reller, lead the newly centralized advertising and media functions.
Tami Reller, former Windows chief marketing officer and chief financial officer, is now executive vice president of marketing. She will lead all marketing and will co-lead with Penn advertising and media.
Eric Rudder, fomer chief technical strategy officer, is now executive vice president of advanced strategy and research. He will lead Microsoft Research, as well as trustworthy computing.
Brad Smith continues as executive vice president and general counsel.
Kirill Tatarinov, former president of Microsoft Business Solutions, is now executive vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions. This small division has mainly been responsible for Dynamics, Microsoft’s customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning offerings. Tatarinov will continue to run Dynamics as is, and “we will keep Dynamics separate as it continues to need special focus and represents significant opportunity,” Ballmer said in his email, adding that Tatarinov’s product leaders will be dotted line reports to Lu, while his marketing leader will a dotted line report to Reller and his sales leader a dotted line report to the COO group.
Kevin Turner will continue as chief operating officer, focusing on worldwide sales, field marketing, services, support, and stores as well as IT, licensing and commercial operations.
Also, Rich Rashid, current head of Microsoft Research, will move into a new role “driving core OS innovation in our operating systems group,” Ballmer said in the email.

Craig Mundie, senior advisor to the CEO, will be working on a special project for Ballmer through the end of this year, and in 2014 will work as a consultant until his previously announced retirement at the end of that year.

Ballmer, in his email, also outlined how people in the company are expected to work together in this new structure:

Process wise, each major initiative of the company (product or high-value scenario) will have a team that spans groups to ensure we succeed against our goals. Our strategy will drive what initiatives we agree and commit to at my staff meetings. Most disciplines and product groups will have a core that delivers key technology or services and then a piece that lines up with the initiatives. Each major initiative will have a champion who will be a direct report to me or one of my direct reports. The champion will organize to drive a cross-company team for success, but my whole staff will have commitment to the initiative’s success.
